Thank You Cards - How To

by Becca Hadley

November is the season of gratitude and so we thought what better way to celebrate than to share a post all about writing thank you cards from your wedding!   I know it isn’t always fun but ladies {and gentlemen}, thank you cards are a MUST.  Your wedding day is full of all the people most important to you in your lifeand they deserve a little appreciation!  Confused on what to write?  How soon after the wedding day to send them?  Read our post below to find out all the answers you need to check thank you cards off of your to-do list!

How to write a thank you card:

Generally you want to get your thank you cards sent out within one month of returning from your honeymoon.  That may sound a little daunting and not enough time.  If you can get them out that quick – you’re awesome!  If not, as long as you get them out by around your 2 month anniversary you will still be good to go!

When writing your thank you cards be sure to follow these guidelines:

-Address the person {s} by name, let them know you really do know who they are {and do what you can to make sure you are spelling their name correctly!}.

-Be specific!  Specifically name the gift you are thanking the for {and compliment it if you can!} IE:  Thank you so much for the adorable plaid dish towels they are going to look perfect in our new kitchen!

-Confused on how to thank for money or gift cards?  Thank them for their generous gift and mention what you will be using it towards.  IE:  Thank you so much for the Target gift card we are so excited to go pick out some new plates for out kitchen!

-Be sure to sign your name {or have it printed on your thank you cards} especially if your cards don’t include a picture!  That way people don’t get confused on who is who!

Here is a little example for you:

Dear Sarah & Bill Hampshire,

Thank you so much for being a part of our wedding day.  It meant so much to have you there.  We appreciate all of your love and support!  Thank you so much for the wonderful new sheet set you gave us, they are so soft and match our bedroom perfectly!  Thank you again for thinking of us during this special times of our lives!

Our favorite tips & tricks when writing thank you cards:

- Pick somewhere cozy and comfy to sit down and write your thank you cards.  Put on some yoga pants and your favorite show- it’ll help the time pass!

- Break your thank you cards into groups.  When I wrote mine I made a goal to do 15 a night when I got home from work.  That way slowly but surely before I knew it I was finished!

- Start writing your thank you’s as soon as the gifts start arriving!  You will of course have bridal showers before the wedding day and those gifts are just as important to show your gratitude for!  What goes around comes around!  You will also have people mail you or drop off gifts before the big day because they won’t be able to make it or don’t want to have to worry about bringing a gift later.  They’re doing you a favor!  Write them a quick thank you as soon as you can so you don’t forget.  I know from experience that lists can easily get lost or deleted even though you swear they wont!  The general rule of thumb is to write your thank you cards for gifts you receive before the wedding within 2 weeks of receiving it.

- Show off your wedding pictures by having them on your thank you cards!  Everyone will absolutely love to see the pictures from your big day and using them on your thank you cards is a great opportunity to use them!

-Turn your thank you cards into postcards.  Not only will it save you on postage BUT in my opinion it also leaves you the perfect amount of room to write your thank you.  Sometimes if you have to much it feels overwhelming like you have to writea novel to fill it all but postcards give you the perfect amount!

Be extremely personable and grateful!  You can’t say thank you too much or share your favorite memories!!

I can’t stress enough the importance of showing gratitude to your guests.  Take the time to do it!  You won’t regret it!  (:

“It’s not happy people who are thankful, it’s thankful people who are happy.”
